I am Fire Chief of the Elk Creek Fire District, a WUI community in the foothills Southwest of Denver CO. I also teach the WUI:FAC course for the National Fire Academy, as well as a number of other WUI course for various organizations.
The Elk Creek Fire District covers 15,000 residents in a 98 square mile area of dense conifer forests in steep terrain. Recently ranked by Core Logic as one of the top five highest risk WUI communities, we are working on long term risk reduction and preparedness.
I have been working and teaching in the Wildland Urban Interface for 29 years in Alaska, Washington and Colorado. I currently serve as a Division Chief on the local Type 3 Incident Management Team, and co-chair the Colorado State Fire Chiefs Operations Section.
