Costilla County Colorado added a Disaster Recovery Manager following the devastating Spring Fire, which is currently the second largest single wildfire in the history of Colorado. The Spring Fire burnt over 108,000 acres and destroyed more than 200 homes in Costilla and Huerfano counties. Costilla County lost 6% of the its housing and will see a devastating reduction in property tax revenue.
We are in the initial stages of the recovery effort and are working on post-fire flood and debris flow mitigation projects.
It has become clear that individual and community responsibility will be key in both the immediate recovery effort, but also in the long term resiliency of the area. Being connected to Fire Adapted Communities Learning Network will greatly enhance out ability to manage both the short term and long term recovery from the Spring Fire.
