As a risk reduction specialist for my agency, I work with community members to prevent human-caused fires and mitigate the consequences of all wildfires that do occur in our district. The fire adapted community model fits within my own understanding of how humans should change their ways to live in wildfire-prone ecosystems. That understanding comes from a background in environmental history (how humans interact with their ecosystems over time) and wildland firefighting.
I coordinate the wildfire mitigation programs for my agency including resident outreach, wildfire classes for kids and adults, neighborhood mitigation planning, Ready Set Goat! (a program where goats are used to conduct mitigation around neighborhoods), Firewise USA applications, and traditional and social media messaging. I also present my lessons learned about wildfire preparedness and education at conferences across the nation and I published a book on the cultural history of human fire interactions in 2016.
