Through a contract from the Buffalo-Duck River RC&D, I serve as a Wildfire Mitigation Specialist for the Tennessee Division of Forestry. I help implement the Division’s state-wide FAC Program with foresters, communities, planners, gov. officials and other agencies. More specifically, I help promote the Firewise, RSG, and Wildfire Prevention Programs, and facilitate the development of CWPPs.
Community Wildifire Protection Plans
Over the past few months, I facilitated one CWPP myself. In addition, I guided three others in the facilitation of CWPPs that have been completed. I am involved in the review process of four more CWPPs that are near completion.
Developing Firewise Communities/Sites
Over the past few months, I have helped guide five communities through the national recognition process. This included community assessments, training community leaders to do home assessments, helping implement the Action Plans within their CWPPs through fuel assessments, and applying for Hazard Mitigation Grants.
Within the next three months, we will be putting on two new 2-4 hour courses. One is to provide local landscapers an understanding of why homes burn, and what they can do to mitigate that with their designs and vegetation choices. The other is a course to offer at a structural fire academy to help firemen understand how to guide a community to become nationally recognized. Neither of these courses have been developed yet.
