I serve as the Wildfire Division Director at the global nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA®) based in Quincy, Massachusetts, USA. My team members, based in Quincy and Denver, are dedicated to wildfire safety outreach. Through NFPA’s Firewise USA® recognition program, which currently (2019) has about 1,600 active sites in 42 states, and the annual Wildfire Community Preparedness Day campaign, we interact with government agencies, elected officials, residents of high-risk areas, and private sector organizations including insurance professionals.
NFPA’s mission in the wildfire space relates to reducing loss and suffering related to life and property. I have a strong interest in community behavior change, how people are motivated to take effective action, and creating new norms for how people live, work and play in areas at high risk for wildfire. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Wildland Fire.
