The Southern Nevada District Fire Mitigation/Education program is managed at the district level and is responsible for all mitigation/education activities occurring within each of the FMUs and three field offices. In addition, the SND Office plays an interagency role in fire prevention with its partners within the Las Vegas Interagency Dispatch Area including the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Nevada Division of Forestry, the USAF/NTTR, the Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Clark and Nye Counties, and surrounding community fire departments.
About 2 million people live in rural and metropolitan areas within Clark County. In contrast, Nye County mostly consists of rural communities and has a population estimated over 42,000. Pahrump, NV is the largest city within Nye County. Many residents in both counties recreate and enjoy BLM managed public lands. On average, human caused fires account for over 50% wildfires across the dispatch area.
This program specializes in three distinct sub-programs managed and implemented by the mitigation and education specialist:
• Wildland Fire Prevention
• Community Assistance
• Fire Trespass
