I am the chairperson of the Mt. Lemmon Firewise Community. As such, I provide leadership to our organization. I work closely with the US Forest Service, Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, as well as local, state and regional government representatives. Mt. Lemmon is a small community surrounded by the Coronado National Forest.

We are very concerned about wildfire impacts and are training Neighborhood Captains to collaborate with their neighbors to provide defensible space. Our area has suffered 3 major forest fires, one of which destroyed a majority of the residences.

I recently retired from Raytheon Missile Systems as a Logistics Manager and am using my time to support Firewise, the Catalina/Rincon Firescape plan, as well as the Mt. Lemmon Fire Department in writing grants, etc. I am also working with the Partnership Coordinator for the Coronado National Forest to develop a partnership/coalition to support the Catalina/Rincon Firescape Project.

Community Wildfire Preparedness Day/Firewise

We divided the community up and assigned sections to Volunteer Neighborhood Captains. They contacted each of their neighbors, either in person or via mail and provided them with Firewise schedules, available resources, and training. We arranged for DOC crews to be available with chain saws and a chipper to remove fuels. We also arranged for Firewise Assessor training by the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, so that volunteers will be familiar with Firewise Assessments, fire behaviors, and how to collaborate to improve the chance of structures to survive wildfire.
