The SCM RC&D received its nonprofit status in 1992. It covers 7.3 million acres or about 11,458 square miles of Lincoln and Otero Counties. SCMRC&D plans and carries out activities that increase conservation of natural resources, support economic development, and enhance the environment and standard of living in local communities. SCM RC&D generally offers services at no cost and works hard to find funding for various projects and community activities as well as offering technical advice and help in grant writing, project organization and implementation.
Rick Merrick is the contact for this profile. He currently the Rural Community Forester for the South Central Mountain RC&D in the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico. He works with Lincoln and Otero counties as the Firewise Liaison. He also helps private land owners with Home Assessments and participation in the New Mexico State Forestry Hazardous Fuel Reduction Cost share programs. He has been with the local Volunteer Fire Dept. for 20 years and helps with training and capacity building in fire departments in both counties.
