I am a firefighter/paramedic and Wildfire Mitigation Specialist for West Metro Fire Rescue in Lakewood, CO. I have been involved in creating response pre-plans for our District, training our personnel in FAC concepts and practices, and leading our community education and outreach efforts. My primary interest is helping community members in the wildland-urban interface to take action to become more fire-adapted.
Wildfire Response Pre-plans
I am leading a project to develop pre-plans, including maps, for our response to wildfires in the WUI areas of our District. We are collaborating with other departments in the Denver Metro area to have a consistent format. Hard copies have been created and printed, and we are finalizing new versions in both paper and electronic formats.
Community Education and Outreach
We are training Department members in the basics of FAC, and creating presentations for homeowner groups that express interest in becoming more fire-adapted. We collaborated with the City of Lakewood to create a brochure that outlines their mowing guidelines for properties that are adjacent to Open Space land. The same brochures provide basic information about the Home Ignition Zone and defensible space, along with providing additional resources for further information.
Ready, Set, Go!
We have customized the Ready, Set, Go! Action Guide for our District, in collaboration with the Colorado State Forest Service, and will be handing them out to our citizens in a door-to-door campaign in celebration of National Wildfire Preparedness Day on May 7.
