Waterford Township is a small rural community located in New Jersey. Sixty percent of our township is located in the Wharton State Forest.
Our Township established a Wildfire Safety Council 2018. We are responsible to oversee three programs; The Ready, Set, Go Program, Firewise Communities, and our Township CWPP. We have established two Firewise Communities in the past two years and are in the process of completing our third by the middle of this year. We are one of only the two Townships in New Jersey that have established a Firewise Community that was not a part of a Homeowners Association. We continue to promote Forest Fire awareness at all township functions and have an annual Firewise Day.
Zone 6 Firewise Community
In the Fall of 2017, we in conjunction with the NJ Forest fire Service and Waterford Township Fire Department an area was selected to do an evaluation of home located on the border of the Wharton State Forested. The area the comprises of 51 homes was selected because of its close proximity to the forest and the lack of egress in some of the area. We received Firewise certification in 2017 and were recertified in 2018.
Wharton Run Development Firewise Community
This was our second Firewise Community. It consisted of 81 homes that again border the Wharton State Forest. We completed our home evaluations in the Spring of 2018 and received our Firewise USA certification later that year. We are working with the Nj Forestry Service and the Wharton State Park to establish and to establish a second means of egress.
Ready, Set, Go information distribution
We realize that we can't cover all the WUI area with our Firewise program so we have distributed over150 homes distributing literature regarding home and safety zone and handing out Ready, Set, Go emergency bag so people will be prepared in the event of a fire. We will continue to expand this program in the coming year.
