Last year, thirty USAFA cadets assisted at the Community Wildfire Preparedness Day in Palmer Lake. Under the direction of The Coalition for the Upper South Platte, the cadets worked to remove overly dense, standing dead, poor-performing, and unhealthy trees from easements and private and community property within Palmer Lake. Wildfire Preparedness Day Funding Applications Due!

Authors: Emily Troisi

National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is taking place on May 7 this year. This will be the third time our friends at the National Fire Protection Association have organized this event, and it seems to be growing in popularity. Each year FAC Net members participate in various ways, engaging and mobilizing their communities to prepare for wildfire season.

This year, State Farm is helping to fund 125 projects with $500 each to help cover expenses related to Preparedness Day activities. These applications are due by February 28. One great thing about this fund is that “activities can be coordinated by anyone (individuals, a small group, an entire neighborhood or a community-based organization) working to reduce wildfire risk, advance general wildfire preparedness, or minimize post-fire impacts from a recent wildfire” according to NFPA so make sure to share this application with your community!

Check out this video if you need some motivation, and then check out our post about hosting your own event.
