Developing Community Connections with Asset Mapping: Widening the Circle, Bridging for Support and Becoming Collaborative Partners

Jana Carp

This resource guide, Widening the Circle, Bridging for Support and Becoming Collaborative Partners, unpacks the final steps (5–7) in the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) process. It explains how to draw interest and ideas from more people (“widening the circle”), when to seek professional expertise, technical advice, funding, equipment and other resources beyond the community in a manner that doesn’t sacrifice the asset-based approach (“bridging for support”), and what types of projects could enhance community-agency collaboration (“becoming collaborative partners”).

This is part of a series of guides that familiarizes FAC practitioners with the how’s and why’s of the asset-based (rather than deficiency-focused) mapping process. See the Series Overview for an introduction to the overall process; this guide discusses the final three steps of the seven-part process.
